- Install operating-system and application updates.
- Maintain a current backup and verify that important files can be restored.
- Restart periodically and keep adequate free disk space.
- Use a surge protector, keep vents unobstructed, and keep liquids away.
- Use unique passwords and multi-factor authentication.
- Never reuse remote-support codes, and verify unexpected support calls.
- Do not install unknown cleanup tools or disable antivirus to open a file.
- Scan downloads and use only approved browser extensions.
- Remove unused applications carefully.
- Watch for overheating, battery swelling, clicking drives, smoke, or burning smells.
- Disconnect power and seek service for a dangerous battery or electrical condition.
- Disconnect from the network and contact support when ransomware is suspected.
- Do not repeatedly power-cycle a failing drive when important data is at risk.
